A Tribute to Our Little Walking Buddy

I’ve been putting off this post for weeks because of my broken heart.  Our beloved Lhasa was only 10 years old when she unexpectedly developed bladder stones last month and had to be put down. Our other two Lhasa Apso’s lived 16 1/2 years and we had no reason to expect she wouldn’t live as long. It was with a heavy heart we made that decision rather than have her endure an intricate painful operation which  provided only a 50% chance of survival at best.

For many years she was my little walking buddy. She kept me on my toes literally. Our two mile walk in Arizona was one I wrote of frequently. She rode shotgun beside me on the passenger seat while I drove the 2500 mile drive from Arizona to Ohio.

I used illustrations I saw in her and our beautiful 14 year old Cocker Spaniel’s behavior many times in my blogs.  It became easy to relate canine behavior to our relationship with God and health. She inspired me to write about trust, discipline and eating habits among other topics which can be found via my search engine on my webpage.

When she was a puppy she was so sweet and affectionate! She would climb upon my chest, wrap her little paws around me and give me an actual hug.  She was a favorite at the dog park at the RV resort we lived in at the time.

Then something happened after we moved into our new home. In most Arizona communities, people went to work, drove home, entered their enclosed garage and sat out on their private patio afterwards, enclosed behind a 6 foot high fence. We failed to keep her socialized and she became over-protective and sadly mean-spirited with strangers.

This was a terrible mistake on our part but we learn from our mistakes. Dog owners aren’t perfect, neither are parents or individuals. I needed to forgive myself and instill necessary changes. So I vowed last year after our beautiful Cocker Spaniel passed, that we would absolutely socialize our transitional pup, “Mr. No-no.” Happily he has become the most loving of pets.

Five years ago when I began this blog, I had no idea what God had in store for me – that He’d ask me to become a pastor’s wife 3 years ago. (You want me to do what God?) I never expected His leading to take me down this pathway. But I began to listen to my Master’s Voice, trust HIm and grew in a closer relationship with my Lord.  Throughout the decision some tough choices had to be made. Now here I am in northeast Ohio surrounded by family and friends, being more blessed than I ever imagined.

It takes an enormous amount of faith to trust God, even through sorrow, knowing that He only has our best interests at heart. Life is messy, hurtful, unfair at times. She was my last tie to my daughter and for that I will be forever grateful for having her in my life.

Someday I’ll know why God’s pathway has lead me to where He wants me to be now, even amidst sorrow. For I’d rather have memories of my little Lhasa buddy than to never have had her in my life at all.  Until then, He has His arms around me, soothing me with comforting Words. All I need to do is trust and learn not pull on my leash. Trust – it’s a liberating word.

“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” (Jeremiah 29:11)

  2. Ellie, I’m so sorry for your loss. Believe me when I say I understand the sadness when losing such an important part of the family. I lost my pet parrot in February. He was almost 15 years old.

Your little buddy was beautiful, and I’m so glad he gave you so much love and so many other things.

    • Thank you for being so kind. So sorry to hear you’ve lost a loving pet as well. My husband and I have been faced with great trials and testing in all areas of our lives theses past two months most likely because my husband’s sermons addressed false prophets and Satan got angry, 🙂 I praise God for His loving arms and strength amidst trials!

A sweet pet does become family as you said. and it tears us apart to lose them for sure. But haven’t our lives been enriched while they are with us? Blessings back, ❤

      • They definitely do enrich our lives. I try to remind myself that frequently nowadays when I need my mother back with me again. And my recently deceased nephew. Losing is so hard, but no one ever can take away what they were to us.

  3. Pets are so special and it is very hard to lose one. We just put down our big dog, Hope, a couple of weeks ago. This is the third time and it never gets easier. We still have a small dog called Buddy and he is sure our buddy right now. Blessings to you and your family!

    • Thank you for your kind words of comfort. You are so right and time heals and hopefully we’ll never lose the memory. Losing our Cocker last year who had traveled to 42 of the 49 States we’ve visited was hard as well, but man (!) as Garth Brooks sang, ” I’d have missed the dance” if we hadn’t had the joy of knowing them both. ❤

  4. Dear Ellie: I am so sorry for your loss. I know from experience how much it hurts. Our pets become such a big part of our families that it is very painful when we lose them. Praying for you that God will comfort you and give you peace. He is a great God who created all the animals and He knows how much we love our pets. When I lost my special dog, Tanner, I remember through tears thanking the Lord that He had allowed Tanner in my life for a short 6 years (we had gotten him from our humane society). A few weeks after that we got another rescue dog and she is the most snuggly, sweetheart anyone could ask for. So again I thanked the Lord for Tanner and for also bringing Magee to me and making room in my heart for her. Isn’t it great that we serve a God who cares about all aspects of our lives !!. Thank you for sharing the lessons you learned thru Mr. No-no. What a great legacy to leave behind. God Bless you all kathy

    • Oh Kathy thank you so much for your comforting words. It takes a while for the heart to catch up to the head though, doesn’t it? Time heals but even reading all the beautiful comments from my dear friends was tough. She was such a cutie! Our poor Cavashon is moping around the house and still searches for her from time to time. It probably won’t be long before we rescue another little guy to keep us and him company. Blessings back

  5. So sorry for you Ellie. I am an animal lover as well and have lost my share of fur babies as well. You are so correct that God can use them to teach us a thing or two along the way. Peace to you.

    • Thank you my friend. She was also my little “tigress” more cat than dog sometimes. Her illness came about so suddenly and that was a mixed blessing I suppose. God is Good and time heals. I praise Him for sending us our cute Cavashon, although the poor pup has had to endure two losses of friends over the past year and a half. Blessings back,

  8. Hugs – our dogs or as my daughter calls them our furbabies will always hold a special place in our hearts. We will see them one day again – Revelation 5:13 ESV
“And I heard every creature in heaven and on earth and under the earth and in the sea, and all that is in them, saying, “To him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb be blessing and honor and glory and might forever and ever!”” and when we do they will be singing and praising right along with us.

    • Oh Patty, thank you for this blessing of pointing out Rev. 5:13. It is perfect for a hurting heart. I’ve always felt we will see our loved ones again and wondered, if there are horses, lions, lambs in heaven then why not pets who have touched our hearts? (My next women’s bible study is on Heaven and this verse will certainly comfort many hearts too.) ❤

  9. So sorry to hear about your little Lhasa. You’re going to miss her on your walks but I’m sure she’ll be with you in another way. I love the quote on the Lord’s plans for us and what you said about trust being liberating. 🙂 .

    • Thank you my friend. You have such a kind heart Carol and your words mean so much to me. Time heals and God is Good. One of my best friends gave me a beautiful brick to place in our garden which says, “Forever in our Hearts” – so true. (Mr. No No misses her also and sometimes mopes around. It has crossed my mind to rescue another dog to keep him company but puppies are meant for younger people 🙂 )
