Well “Nuts” To That Myth!

Back when I began my nutritional career, nuts were considered off the menu. “Too much fat!” experts claimed. Of course eggs, potatoes and chocolate were too. These are myths.

thKCICGCJJOnce all calories were considered equal, but actually they aren’t. We inhabit a wonderfully designed machine. Candy and fruit work in different biochemical ways.

Automobiles need oil, gas and regular tune-ups to work properly. Similarly, humans need a variety of nutrients to work efficiently. Clean Nutrients and proper maintenance produce a healthier body.

I love physiology and enjoy explaining why consuming these nutritious foods are beneficial to our well-being.  Just knowing that nuts are great for the skin and are anti-aging are two important points for me! A third is that they are fabulous for extending memory recall. We need those memory cells!

Nuts are packed with protein, enzymes, antioxidants and so many beneficial nutrients, among them many Thiamine, Riboflavin, Niacin, B12, vitamin E, manganese, potassium, magnesium, iron, zinc and essential fatty acids.

Nuts are anti-inflammatory so anyone fighting arthritis, dementia or IBS type challenges would be advised to include them in your daily diet. They also lower blood pressure, heart disease and assist in the prevention of colon and prostate cancer. A little nut butter on an apple, banana or whole wheat toast should fill one up for several hours without cravings.

Nuts are rich in at least four 50-cent omega 3 words such as linoleic Cholesterol and fats clog one’s arteries but walnuts are excellent for brain and heart health. These nutrients enrich our heart and brain pathways preventing strokes, clogged arteries and heart attacks.

When I was a little kid, with so many walnut trees on our farm, my brother and I made a game of smashing all those shells to get the wonderful meat inside. I think we ate them all year round. If stored properly in a freezer or cool dark area, they’ll remain edible for months.

However:

  • In moderation, as in anything else, they’re fine. Brazil nuts however are high in the mineral selenium and can be toxic in large doses. Consume only about 2-3 to avoid overdosing.
  • Avoid the canned nut samplers produced with oils. They can become rancid more quickly.
  • Avoid processed nut butters with trans-fats which can clog arteries.

So why were these considered “bad” foods? Hate to say it but ignorance, bad science and unhealthy diet plans were reasons. Case in point, the Paleo Diet encourages nuts but nixes legumes and beans. Why? Even in moderation? It’s not practical.

Here’s an interesting comparison based on 1 cup of the following:

  • Walnuts = 1464 calories & 15.2 grams of fiber/148 grams fat (4 grams = 1 teaspoon)
  • Pecans = 1544 calories & 21.6 grams of fiber/163 grams fat (plus butter/sugar in pie)

or you could choose nutritious:

  • Split peas = 230 calories & 16 grams of fiber/1 tsp fat. Hearty soup anyone?
  • Black beans = 227 calories & 15 grams of fiber/<1 tsp fat. Great in Chili.
  • Pinto beans = 224 calories & 15.4 grams of fiber/<1 tsp. fat. High protein too.

Why not choose all of the above in moderation? Each of these foods provide excellent nutrition and none are bad for us. Each contain valuable vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, enzymes and phytonutrients to assist in proper functioning.

Once again, Genesis 1:29, God knew it all the time!  As always He expects us to use common sense. Any food can become a trigger to addiction or allergies. If one can’t resist overeating, don’t bring a product into the house. Balance is always essential for  proper health.

“For the LORD gives wisdom; From His mouth come knowledge and understanding. He stores up sound wisdom for the upright; He is a shield to those who walk in integrity.” (Proverbs 2: 6,7)

A Nutritionist’s Opinion of Paleo

We live by Grace. So unless we’re under doctor supervision can pretty much eat what we want, even if it’s not good for us. Which brings me to the Paleo Diet and a question I was asked recently, “How good is it?”

Let’s be real; no one wakes up exclaiming, “Man, I can’t wait to feel unhealthy today!” Following this plan could do it though!

Besides my obvious objection of “my ancestors weren’t cavemen, sorry about yours,” I grant Paleo’s a catchy title and peaked my interest when it first debuted. double bacon cheeseburger paleo

I grew up on a farm when the rich soil produced abundant, nutrient-dense fruits and vegetables. Nowadays we have depleted the soil, changed the chemical makeup of produce and wheat, adding chemicals and preservatives to foods to lengthen shelf life. “Enriched” bread might sound good on paper but the bran is removed and synthetic vitamins added to bring it up to normal standards  (minus the beneficial fiber.) High-fiber bread is nutrient-dense but off-limits on this diet.

Paleo has a short list of “eat this, not that.” I failed to see any practical physiological science behind it. It’s very confusing! Sweet potatoes, potatoes, yams are banned but further down they’re allowed “in moderation.” Define moderation.

Except for a few fruits and some vegetables, the fiber content is unhealthily low. High-fiber foods significantly lower the risk of diabetes, high cholesterol, heart disease, obesity, stroke and hypertension. One needs both soluble and insoluble fiber. One should consume 25 – 35 grams of fiber daily to prevent intestinal polyps, parasites, worms and other lovely creatures. (For that reason alone I wouldn’t trust this diet!)

Oatmeal and “cereals” are strictly no-no’s. No clarification is made between high-fiber Kashi brands, Raisin Bran, etc. or low-fiber Corn Flakes!

Lentils, legumes, pinto, kidney, red, black beans and peanuts are off limits. Why? These beneficial foods have both types of fiber plus protein, thiamine, E, folic acid, iron, magnesium. These help lower cholesterol!

No beets? One of the most nutrient-rich vegetables?

Pasta’s off the list too, not even white fiber pasta. Along with a nutritious lean beef/tomato sauce, rich in vitamin’s C and iron, it’s healthy.

No yogurt either! Again no distinction between high-quality, good-bacteria yogurt which gets right into the gut and the unhealthy type with added sweeteners. Of course sauerkraut has good bacteria – but for breakfast on an empty stomach? Ugh.

I never claim to be smarter than God. I trust Him when He indicated in Genesis 1:29 to consume whole grains, fruits, vegetables, herbs, nuts and seeds. Then in Genesis 9:3 God added meat to the menu.

Well what about meats?

“First one catches a rattlesnake or bear  . . .” Seriously it’s on the list! So is ostrich, kangaroo, turtle, 60% fat chicken wings and chemically-laden, nitrate-enriched bacon (but sirloin’s not!) Ground beef? There’s no restriction given between lower-fat 93% sirloin and 73% hamburger. So let’s see: it’s okay to consume a double bacon cheeseburger but Sirloin steaks, baked sweet potatoes, green beans and wholesome fibrous breads are off-limits? Do you see why I’m skeptical?

Yet, there’s always a little truth in any diet. Paleo distains chemical sweeteners, energy drinks, refined sugars and spam. Great, but so does the Mediterranean, MIND, Dash and Weight Watcher’s without gimmicks. What a complicated diet plan. Wouldn’t it be easier to simply follow God’s Plan? (According to the Creator of Heaven and Earth, 1 Corinthians 10:23, anything’s fine in moderation, even bacon cheeseburgers.) Please follow clear cut physiological Truth without gimmicks.

“For life is more than food, and the body more than clothing.” (Luke 12:23)

There is no money, only health, in recommending God’s Dietary Plan for my patients. Therefore: “As for me and my house I will serve the Lord. (Joshua 24:15)

So Many Diet Plans! Which to Choose?

The 2016 US News and World Report list of “Best Diet Plans” was recently balanced dietpublished. The top five diet plans didn’t change much since last year and it’s always gratifying to view those I highly recommend among the top 5.  Of course  all my diet plans are endorsed by the True Creator of all Good and Practical Diets. One’s which God knew, as our Designer, a person could remain on for life!

So the newest list is:

  • The Dash Diet
  • The Mind Diet (a combo of the DASH and Mediterranean diets, targeting mental function)
  • Therapeutic Lifestyle Changes (TCL)
  • Fertility Diet
  • Mayo Clinic Diet

All of these individual plans are variations on a theme. Each is based on a diversity of fibrous whole grains, fruits, vegetables, seeds, nuts, lean meats and good fats. Oh my! . . .  I was so surprised . . . NOT! No matter how many times, diet gurus try to rearrange God’s message on dietary recommendations (Genesis 1:29, Genesis 9:3, Acts 10: 10-14, 1 Corinthians 10:23)  it all comes back to one basic truth: physiology.

Why do people get snared by false, fiber-less and sometimes dangerous programs? Well, desperation and hope can drive some to do crazy things. When someone diets and then gains weight back, panic ensues. I understand. No one wants to be embarrassed or perceived as a failure. People become desperate!

Case in point: In the ’90s, Oprah Winfrey set up a false diet center in a mall. The diet was based on eating only hot dogs and ice cream all day. Now, you’re probably thinking, that’s crazy, who would ever sign up for such an obviously fake diet plan? Well, I believe 41 people signed up in two days.  Did they actually believe that eating chemically-laden, nitrate-based, fatty meat and creamed, sugared saturated fat would lead to a healthier lifestyle? Probably not, but they were willing to try anything to lose weight.

If one understands physiology, he’ll know a diet restricting certain food categories will  lead to stronger cravings because our hypothalamus, (that little “mom” in our brain) is nagging us to consume other essential nutrients which our body needs! For example, a diet consisting only of fruit (grapefruit diet anyone?) lacks over 50 essential nutrients for a healthy metabolism. Moderation of all food groups is the key to success.

So don’t diet at all! Live and eat sensibly. My instructor is my LORD. If God is your teacher, then you’ll base your lifestyle on what the Word says, not on some outlandish diet claim urging you to spend money on false advertising.

Materialism is today’s worldly god. Everyone’s out for the almighty dollar. There is very little money in following God’s Simple, Sensible Eating Plan. It’s free. Many of my patients over the years have urged me to write my own “diet” plan. Actually I don’t believe in diets, only healthier lifestyles.

It’s my prayer that my posts will inspire others to follow God’s Plan. For what one truly needs cannot be found at the bottom of a carton of Ben & Jerry’s ice cream. People need God to fill their soul with purpose and meaning.

All things are lawful for me, but not all things are profitable. All things are lawful for me, but I will not be mastered by anything. Food is for the stomach and the stomach is for food, but God will do away with both of them. Yet the body is not for immorality, but for the Lord, and the Lord is for the body.” 1 Corinthians 6: 12-13 (NASB)

Another Year – Another Diet??? Really?

Once again it’s the silly season of weight loss. 45 million people began a diet plan last year, how many finished?  Yeah, you guessed it, not many.thYOIH74IR

I know most had the right intentions but life got in the way.  We aren’t perfect but sometimes all it takes is one failure and we quit! Consider this; if you had slowly but surely stayed on your “program”  how much less would you weigh this year: 20, 35, 50 or even 75 pounds?  Sigh, the “if only’s” guilt your mind now. Why do I quit everything I start? Why did I think I wasn’t worth it? Why am I a failure?

That’s where a nutritional counselor comes in. Get to the root of the problem. It’s a fact that until someone becomes aware of why they do as they do, they will never change. One must get to the “why” before they will experience success. What misconceptions must you overcome?

FACT:  There is no true instant gratification.  We must work for all we acquire through sacrifice or the results rarely last! Don’t agree?  How many sports stars falter when they acquire a multi-million dollar contract?  (Manziel come to mind?)  How many celebrity singers/movie stars fall upon the altar of hero-worship only to get hit by life’s reality stick of peer pressure, drugs, fan worship, million dollar contracts?  How many lottery winners lose it quickly to huge homes, sports cars and other toys they can’t afford?

Too much, too soon! The reward came about before the discipline to maintain it.  Same with weight loss. Your body needs time to adjust to change, “settle in” so to speak, allowing your mind to catch up with this new determined you.

FACT:  The  Process is more important than the progress!  Through the process you’ll learn how to handle challenges – be it defeating saboteurs, temptations, laziness, boredom or whatever and create strategies to overcome.  Through it all you’ll learn self-discipline and confidence so that nothing will stand in the way of a goal.

“Brothers I do not consider myself yet to take hold of it, But one thing I do; Forgetting what is behind I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 3:13)

Create goals: chart and track them, what they are, how you accomplished them and the date achieved. Concentrate on your victories and you’ll begin to like this new you and never desire to return to your unhealthy self. That’s similar to true salvation!  Why would a Christian want to go back to the old life of debauchery and unspiritual living?

FACT: Weight loss is an individual challenge. Only you can lose weight, no one else can do it for you!  You are the only one who lives inside your body. You are totally responsible for everything you do whether it is exercising daily or placing food in your mouth. Your choice. Sound discouraging, right? But look at the JOY you experience when by your own determined actions you conquered and chose correctly.

. . . once again, just like Salvation. As much as I want someone to get healthy, they must want it more than I want it for them. I can’t make anyone healthy anymore than I can make them saved!

So my question is:  WHY do you want to get healthier?  What’s motivating you?

“Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters,”  (Colossians 3:23)

I’ll begin my blogging year with a series of practical posts on creating mental, physical and spiritual fitness in 2016. Please stay tuned,

“Why Do I Crave Cokes?”

Although we live under Grace in this age and can pretty much do as we please with our physical bodies, we would do well to note that bodies are NOT our own. We were bought at a price.

Don’t you know that your body is a sanctuary of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God?  You are not your own for you have been bought at a price. Therefore glorify God in your body. (1 Corinthian 6:19,20)

Christians prefer not to be a slave to any idol, even food. So why do some crave colas and other sugary drinks while others won’t touch the stuff?

thAN5J2C0SIt is a scientific fact that God designed each of us with a slightly different chemical make-up. It’s called DNA. Due to the fact that were are all chemically unique, our brains crave different nutrients. That’s why some crave saltier items like pretzels or potato chips while others crave chocolate and sweets.

Physically speaking, some crave food for needed energy. If you’ve been overworked or overstressed, your body wants instant energy and the sugar and caffeine would restore that energy level quickly. Sugars are released in your body in about 15 minutes. (Green tea would be a good energy substitute.)

Caffeine is also a drug and although okay in moderation, is addictive and washes away valuable B vitamins and other valuable nutrients. Lacking nutrients, you are hungry again. it’s a vicious cycle.

If you consume a nutritionally balanced diet, you’re naturally more energetic and derive your chemical energy from whole foods. Therefore craving junk food isn’t a desirable practice.

But why do some become addicted to Aspartame (NutraSweet, Equal) and Sucralose (Splenda) drinks?

These products change body chemistry, raising blood sugar levels and producing miserable side effects. Personally, having experienced adverse reactions, I totally avoid them. And I’m not alone as many of my patients have complained of shakiness, heart palpitations, skin rashes, stomach and kidney pains after consuming any product containing these artificial sugars.

Artificial drinks also tend to make one hungrier. There seems to be a connection between the ghrelin – leptin hormonal metabolic insulin response. Ghrelin is the hormone that tells you you’re hungry while Leptin shuts off the “I’m hungry” response. Recent scientific studies have shown that  these chemicals can interfere with the leptin cut off lever, leaving a person desiring more food. artificial sugars

So if artificial sugars defeat the purpose of losing weight, then why risk additional health concerns by using these chemically produced items you can’t pronounce? The body doesn’t recognize these chemicals as food, therefore it cannot detoxify them so they remain in your liver forever.

Still crave cokes? It could be a comfort response too. We all eat for emotional reasons as well as physical. That’s why certain foods such as chocolate, ice cream and mac and cheese are called “comfort” foods. If you shared sodas with friends when younger, you might miss those friendships. Drinking a coke brings back a great memory! Or it simply makes you feel happy – and who wants to give up THAT feeling? By the way, I create my own sodas with carbonated flavored water (without artificial sweeteners) with a good quality fruit juice. Refreshing and it contains a few nutrients.

Bottom line: I urge you not to believe false advertising which only benefits the manufacturers of these products. These people don’t care about your body as God does. Aspartame and Splenda were created by chemists. My food was created by God. Before you purchase, research the ingredients.  If you can’t pronounce it, don’t buy it!

Crazy or Sensible? Debating the Atkins Diet Plan

I was at a pancake breakfast fundraiser one morning, when a sweet young lady looked at what I was consuming and commented, “Wow, I never touch orange juice, that stuff is pure poison!” as she placed a fourth strip of bacon into her mouth.  Sure enough she was on the Atkins Diet. Let’s see, I was drinking something that was filled with vitamin  C, potassium, magnesium, folate, B6, calcium, vitamin A, niacin and iron.  She was eating a food that contained preservatives, nitrates and cholesterol laden saturated fat. We all have a choice – You make the call.

I Timothy 4:7,8 ” Have nothing to do with irreverent, silly myths. Rather train yourself for godliness; for while bodily training is of some value, godliness is of value in every way, as it holds promise for the present life and also for the life to come.”

thB7VM6I7KThe basic principle behind the Atkins Diet is nothing new, it was proposed in 1863 by a London undertaker. Ironic to say the least. The Atkins Diet is not how God created us to eat.  In the Garden of Eden He advised Adam to consume every seed bearing fruit, plant and tree for food. (Genesis 1:29) The last time I checked, an orange was from a seed bearing tree. Fruits, (carbohydrates) are not allowed on Atkins. But when God speaks, I listen.

I’m amazed at how many people follow this diet! I know it can work for some people because we all have a different chemical make-up, but here is a list of physiological reasons why, as a nutritionist, I’d personally never recommend this diet plan:

  • There’s a higher risk of high cholesterol and kidney stones.
  • When your body is unable to burn glucose it turns to burning fat, which produces a body chemical called ketones. As Ketones rise, uric acid increases, as does gout possibilities.
  • Toxins fester in the fat cells due to chemicals and hormones being released in a higher body-fat environment, changing your personality for the worse.
  • The body doesn’t receive enough diverse vitamins or minerals, but does receive too much iron.
  • Too many fat soluble vitamins, (A,D, E, K and selenium) are released, which are toxic in large doses.
  • Abnormal heart rhythms rise due to a forced excretion of potassium & sodium while not retaining enough magnesium.
  • Without the high fiber intake from whole grains, cholesterol levels rise, as does a risk of colon cancer, when all waste isn’t excreted from the body.
  • This diet produces a ph on the acidic side. Cancers thrive in an acidic environment. Want to roll the dice?
  • Processed meat contains enormous amounts of nitrates, fats, dyes and salt, increasing cancer risk.
  • It works due to water loss. Carbohydrates are the nutrients that hold water in the body and the dieter’s not consuming carbs.  When they’ve gone back to eating carbs after they’ve quit the Atkins Diet, water is retained, therefore making one believe carbs are the problem.

Dr. Atkins called his idea a “Diet Revolution“.  Who and what was he rebelling against . . .  God’s perfect design to eat fruits, vegetables and whole grains??? The Atkins Diet excludes fruits and starchy vegetables which God ordained for us to eat in the Garden of Eden.

As a Christian, I’d rather not rebel against my LORD, would you?  “You say, “I am allowed to do anything”–but not everything is good for you. You say, “I am allowed to do anything”–but not everything is beneficial.” (1 Corinthians 10:23)

It’s your choice. Choose to honor God by eating healthier.

Dying To Be Thin!

th8F7O7EN1How many of you, reading this, would sign up for the following weight loss program if it clearly stated the following:

“Volunteers needed to test a new diet program.  Some foods are toxic and will cause paralysis and blindness.”

I’m sure none of you, right? Clearly this plan states that this eating plan would cause blindness and paralysis for attempting it.  It’s crazy! However, a few years ago, Rachel Ray conducted an experiment on her webpage (she certainly didn’t endorse this!) requesting volunteers to sign up for this particular weight loss plan.  Over 1,400 people signed up!! Unbelievable! Literally, some people are dying to be thin for a perceived world-view body image.

You might think the above false diet plan is an amazingly ridiculous example of losing weight, but think about your own diet choices in the past. How many of you have tried liquid diets, the Atkins Diet, Cabbage Soup Diet, cottage cheese diet, grapefruit diet, no-carbs, no-fat, diet pills; it goes on and on and on . . .  there is no “one size fits all” diet plan, everyone is physiologically different. But this isn’t how God originally created us to live. He placed Adam in a garden and gave him fruits, vegetables and whole grains to eat. Meat came later after the flood.

It’s amazing how God has created each one of us with a unique physiology!

“For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb.” (Psalm 139:13)

What a fabulous DNA we have! No other person on earth who has ever lived or is living is exactly like you. It boggles the mind when you think of the billions of people who have existed on this earth and yet, no one looked or acted just like you.

In today’s society everyone seems celebrity conscious.  Everyone wants to look like Kim Kardashian or Brad Pitt.  People are so desperate to lose a few pounds that they will even risk their health to do so! Why would we want to destroy our earthy temple? Be content with who you are: Phil 4:11 ” . . . I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances,” or take steps to change yourself.

  • Write a list of what makes you special, what you like about yourself.
  • Then write down what you don’t like about yourself.
  • What can you change and not change?
  • That which you can change, start creating strategies to overcome them. (Be kinder, think before speaking, be socialable, study harder)
  • If you can’t change, ex: physical looks, if you haven’t enough money to get a chin implant, then accept yourself for who you are.

Failure to accept who we are begins in childhood and can deter us from all types of goals. If you had parents who expected perfection from you, constantly comparing you to siblings, you might believe you are never good enough and stuff those feelings down with comfort foods.  You might equate eating everything on your plate with appreciation and love, because parents praised instead of criticized when you did.thODH7X3T7

If you were fortunate enough to have a parent who encouraged you and told you could do anything if you put your mind to it, you probably still hold that mindset today. Phil 4:13 states, ” I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.”

Realize you are special simply because God made you! He didn’t create a robot world – we each have good and bad characteristics which makes us interesting.  Take steps to accept yourself.

REMEMBER:  You are SPECIAL simply because you Are . . . and GOD DOESN’T MAKE JUNK!

Those Wild & Crazy Diet Plans – Where do I Begin?!

thMSN3T0ZASo many diets . . .  so little time. Honestly there’s an incredible amount of wacky diets available. Where to begin?!

Let’s start with the Fruit Diet.  Do you realize if you only consume fruit (which is water-based, fiber packed and seems tempting) you’ll be missing out on over 50 essential nutrients your body needs? Balance is the key and this is definitely not balanced. You’ll never be able to stay on this plan because the body will become physiologically frustrated. The only good “diet plan” is the one you’ll stay on for life. (Diabetics should never attempt this diet.)

Here’s the main physiological reason why we can’t remain on any crazy plan:

The hypothalamus, an almond sized master gland in your brain is responsible for certain metabolic functions. It acts like a mechanic, checking on all the working parts of your car’s fuel system, so to speak. It might check your fluid levels and note, “Okay, you’ve got enough potassium but whoops, you’re a quart low on magnesium. You need more of that!”

The hypothalamus will begin nagging the body to consume more magnesium from an outside source. Well broccoli has magnesium, but so does chocolate. Which one do you think you’re going to give in to? Veggies . . . or chocolate? Of course the chocolate! Eventually, after you break and give in to temptation, you’ll probably believe you’re a failure which is what Satan wants you to think. Remember God created us as an intricate machine for a reason and all our parts work together for good. He made you and He doesn’t make junk!

How about those extreme Detox Diets which are meant to flush out toxic waste from our system? In one sense yes, we are to keep our body detoxified to allow our liver and kidneys to function properly. Our bodies should remain as close to the alkaline pH scale of  a 7.3 ratio as possible. But if one doesn’t know what he’s doing, he could offset his electrolyte system and death will follow . . . now THAT’s a way to lose weight permanently. By consuming fibrous whole grains, fruits, nuts, vegetables, herbs, seeds and water, you’ll naturally keep your body at a wholesome pH level. Consume meat as a side dish and add Essential Fatty Oils such as olive and canola oil sparingly.

There are no Secret Miracle Supplements. Some are downright dangerous, causing heart arrhythmia and muscle weakness. Our God is a God of order and balance. All body parts must function properly and there is no special food that cures weight gain. Slow down, use smaller plates, drink water and exercise instead. Boring but reliable.

The Fast Food Diet:  Each of us has a unique body chemistry, so there are exceptions to this rule, but basically, if one eats sugary, fattening junk food every day, we become lethargic, grumpy, even “spacy.” Nutrients give us energy and keeps our brains focused; there are very few nutrients in processed fast food and French fries.

The Cookie DietSeriously?  This ranks right up there with the Hot Dog Diet! Is this how God wants us to eat forever??? We are not cows or sheep which can eat one type of food every day, anyway. When I hear someone claim, “Man, I could eat this every night!” I think, no, not really. Listen to your hypothalamus. We need different nutrients to remain healthy.

Your body will do everything in its power to protect you. If you’ve heard of children who survive after drowning in a pool for 20 minutes or a 110 pound wife who lifts a Volkswagen off her husband, then you know how amazing our bodies are. So would you think Starvation Diets could work? All that happens is that your metabolism slows down believing you are ill. When you go back to eating normally again, it will hold on to every calorie for dear life, “protecting” you.

I’ve only briefly touched on a few crazy plans. Please don’t be swayed by diet gurus professing false physiological truths and waste your money. Research and use your God-given common sense.

“Watch out for false prophets. They come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ferocious wolves.” (Matthew 7:15)

We’ll come back to this subject after we discuss more current plans: Volumetrics, Paleo, Gluten-free, Atkins, Vegan, those packaged food plans and others. If you can’t wait, check out my newest book, “Life’s Too Short to Eat Bad Cheese . . .” (Nutritional and Life Lessons God Teaches Us) available on Amazon and Barnes and Noble.

Healthy Potato Chips??? Really?

thN961LBREWhat is it about these celebrities and endorsements regarding food? It never fails to amaze me how people will totally follow some advice spoken by a popular figure but fail to research Truth.

I heard a very respected, female morning news anchor (who I truly enjoy listening to) excitedly announce recently, ” . . . and they are gluten-free!!!” insinuating that the type of potato chips she was sampling was a healthy alternative to junk food.

News Flash:  Potatoes have no gluten and have always BEEN gluten-free. Gluten is a protein found in wheat, rye and barley which gives bread its chewiness. Have you ever eaten a “chewy” potato? Hope not.

Besides that, these are POTATO CHIPS  containing nearly two teaspoons of fat per 1 ounce and 140 calories! (And who can stop at one ounce?) And if you are a curious person (as I am) you’d probably try each type and overload on those fat calories. Healthy? God gave you free will, you make the call. If you indulge, drink water and exercise to burn it off. Then you are in control, rather than the potato chip controlling you.

For a fun holiday treat, Boulder Canyon Kettle Cooked Canyon Cut Potato Chips might be a better alternative than regular chips at 3 teaspoons of fat per ounce, but make no mistake, this is not a healthy food. Remember as we read in 1 Corinthians 10:23, “”I have the right to do anything,” you say–but not everything is beneficial. “I have the right to do anything”–but not everything is constructive.” Losing control by overindulging is never constructive to the spirit.

Potatoes without tons of butter, bacon, sour cream and cheese, are extremely healthy but still get a bad rap when it comes to diets. A potato contains vitamins A, E, D, K, C, B1, B2, B3, B6, folate, choline, calcium, iron, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, zinc, copper, manganese, selenium and the potato skin contains an average of 4 grams of valuable fiber. God placed the potato in the Garden of Eden and urged us to consume it. (Genesis 1:29) Who are these fallible diet gurus to say God made a mistake?

My mantra, which I have emphasized over and over again is, Eat For Nutrients, not calories, fat grams or any one food group. Balance is the key to health and anything is fine in moderation. Please don’t be manipulated by misleading advertising.

This reminds me of the perplexed man I met at the grocery store one day.  I noticed him taking one bottle of cooking oil after another off the shelf, diligently searching over each label. When I asked if he needed help; he replied that he was looking for one which contained no cholesterol. I gently told him that no oil contained cholesterol. But he announced, “But one particular oil stated it contained NO cholesterol and I can’t remember which one.”  I politely told him that since cholesterol is only made by the liver and olives and other vegetables have no liver, there’s no fear of selecting any one of those on the shelf. None had cholesterol, advertisers were simply manipulating the public. He seemed skeptical and I moved on.

Oh well. I’ll pray that you prefer to not be a media sheep following any advice without checking it out.

“For the foolishness of God is wiser than man’s wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than man’s strength.”  (1 Corinthians 1:25)

Where Do These Celebrities Get These Ideas???

thE41MPS7BI hardly ever watch afternoon television but the other day while I was packing, I turned on the TV to break the silence. I found a health program and listened intently as this celebrity cautioned against drinking distilled water!  She proclaimed to her entire audience that distilled water not only washes away minerals, but is dangerously acidic.

Say what . . . ???  Where did she get this incredibly crazy  advice and why did she pass it along to her audience without any authorized documentation? What a myth! And yet many will follow this celebrity’s declaration simply because of who she is, rather than ‘test the spirits’ to discern truth.

Distilled water is naturally pure water. It’s created by allowing the steam from the water to drip down and condense. Yes, some  minerals (as well as impurities) are filtered out, but we should get most of our minerals through fruits and vegetables anyway. Once again it’s a matter of balance. I’m sure you’ve heard that some have even died after they became imbalanced, losing too many electrolytes by over-drinking water – ANY water, not just distilled water.

When you hear someone declare, “Distilled water leaches minerals from your body,” it’s a half-truth. Hearing that, one might immediately panic, perceiving that valuable calcium, potassium, magnesium, manganese and other essential minerals are hemorrhaging out of your system.  These necessary minerals are alkaline forming and physiologically stay in our cells. It’s important for our body’s pH to remain on the alkaline side because it prevents acidic illnesses such as cancers and cardiovascular disease. Fruits, vegetables and whole grains (except wheat) test as alkaline.  Meat, processed foods, soft drinks and sugars are acidic. Simply  consume 5x’s more fruits and vegetables than meat and you’ll remain alkaline.

By using this scare tactic, some of what this celebrity stated exhibited plain ignorance. Yes, distilled water removes minerals from your system – dangerous ones that we don’t want to remain in our body. Doesn’t she realize that when one drinks any type of water (spring, tap, bottled)  it washes toxins out of our system? I wouldn’t want aluminum, chlorine, mercury or arsenic to remain in my system, would you? So continue to drink distilled water and stay healthy. And please don’t be confused by something called “deionized water,”  which is undrinkable,  used to clean computer boards and US Navy ships.

In our Christian life, we sometimes do the same, following a celebrity preacher because he’s got a nice smile and seems so sweet but never opens his Bible to profess the Word of the Lord. I’m sure Jim Jones was very charismatic too but look how many followed him into the pit of hell?  This is what happens when someone follows blindly without checking out all the facts before professing Truth. Don’t believe everything you hear. Test the spirits before following like sheep, whether it’s a preacher or a nutritional guru.

“Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world.” (1 John 4:1 )
