Do you feel beautiful inside and out? True beauty touches on all aspects of mental, physical and spiritual health. Everyone longs to look and feel their best. Some do so for questionable motives, (Oh, aren’t I beautiful?) while others to overcome illness or simply for a healthier lifestyle, respectful of our Lord who designed us.
Find Peace. One of my patients, a young woman, looked so much older due a spiteful attitude. She refused to forgive someone from twenty years ago. That person went on with life, oblivious to the rancorous attitude against her. Who did it hurt more, my patient or the recipient? Of course my patient!
Our energy level reflects on our faces. Retaining an unforgiving spirit only manages to destroy the one holding it. That’s exhausting!
Spiritually: Reduce stress
Occasionally I’ve been told, “Wow, you look tired today” and immediately any energy I had left escaped because I thought, “Gosh, maybe I am.” Relax, stress adds years to your face! Find ways to de-stress through Bible meditation, aromatherapy, soft music, fresh air activities, bubble baths, sit on the beach or massages.
A peaceful, contented demeanor makes one look and feel younger. The most perfect way to become stress-less is to cast your cares on the Lord. “Be anxious for nothing,” (Philippians 4:6. ) Learn to rest in the fact that God controls our destiny and He only desires what’s best for you so do His Will.
Physically: Honor your body
God loves the “beauty-challenged” as much as he loves Miss Universe for God looks at the heart.
“The LORD does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart.” (1 Samuel 16:7)
To honor Him, become your best physicological self.
Many believe we drink water only to fill us up and reduce hunger pains. Well partially, but there are so many practical reasons to drink water daily. I won’t go into detail here but please use my search engine above to discover all the important reasons why water is essential for healthy living. Water not only bathes your skin in moisture, it removes toxins from your body which could appear on the surface of the skin as blemishes. If you can’t stand water, then drink green tea.
Increase collagen production, eat nutritionally balanced!
Collagen is a protein that firms the skin and reduces sagging. As we age we lose collagen in our skin. But some foods will actually increase collagen production and fruits and vegetables contain protein too: spinach, broccoli, cabbage, red peppers, strawberries, beets, tomatoes, oranges, cherries, apples, walnuts, beans and guavas among others.
Cut down on sugar and junk foods. Choose foods that are filled with antioxidants, vitamin A, E, C. They will reduce inflammation.
Consume omega-3 fatty acids. Those dieters who restrict fat run the risk of depleting not only the brown fat that protects vital organs and your heart muscle but risk having sallow complexions. By consuming too much fat, one risks high cholesterol and tricyceride levels which can produce a greyish hue to the skin tone.
Great selections are salmon, shrimp and other fatty fish, milled flaxseed, walnuts, tuna, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts. kidney beans.
Forget about starvation and “dieting.” That robs nutrients from the skin! Learn how nutrients metabolize within the body’s physiology to create youthful health.
Real beauty truly begins from the inside out. Forget the over-promising, nearly $150 billion “miracle” cream industry, eat right and start looking younger. Become a New Creation. 2 Corinthians 5:17
“Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.” (Galatians 6:9)
So what’s preventing you from reaching your health goal? You certainly know what to do: eat less junk, exercise more, slow down, drink water . . . you know the drill. So if you want to become healthier, what prevents you?
Yes, its’ a long, tedious road but look how much you are learning along the way! You are becoming self-disciplined. Only you can lose this weight for only you live within the confines of your skin. As much as I want you to lose weight and get healthy, I can’t do it for you. Isn’t that similar to Salvation? Only you can accept God’s Grace.
Remain positive. Each day you are one day closer than you were yesterday. Find ways to make this endeavor fun! If you don’t enjoy going to the gym, then dance at home or walk through the park. Tennis, golf, biking, swimming – it’s all exercise. Music lifts the soul, so exercise to motivating music and just keep going, talking yourself into success.
Or do you believe in the Penance Principle? God is only satisfied when you suffer and expects restitution and personal flogging? God created you and realizes you will make mistakes. That’s why He sent His only Son to cleanse your mistakes if you allow Jesus to do so.
We don’t expect perfection from others so why do we expect it from ourselves? It’s only a failure if you don’t learn from those mistakes.
Are you suffering through disgusting, unappetizing foods?
God created so many colorful, wonderfully nutritionally diverse foods for us to enjoy so why suffer with a “twigs and sticks” diet? There is a metabolic purpose in every food. Each contain nutrients that have different jobs. Choose a wide variety of foods and stop suffering needlessly because it never works. Your body rebels, in fact the hypothalamus in your brain tries to influence what you need nutritionally to work effectively. Listen to it.
Man develops these myths that bananas, potatoes, bread, eggs and other foods are bad for your health. Where did that come from? From the diet guru who wants to make a mint on your gullibility. Don’t become a sheep. One’s brain is smarter than that. It knows what you need to generate energy. If you consume nutrient-dense selections, you’ll run like a well-built machine.
When challenges get tough, did you quit?
Were you like that all your life? When life got tough did you crawl into a hole, run away or shrug your shoulders in exasperation and exclaim, “Well I guess that’s the way God made me?” Well STOP IT! God encourages, the devil discourages so who put those thoughts in your head? Remember God says you CAN, so just do it already. Exercise? The time you attempt to talk yourself out of it, you could have already walked around the block.
Do you start out with grandiose, unreachable goals?
If one starts out thinking he can lose 10 pounds of fat per week, it ain’t gonna happen, it’s physically impossible! And then when you don’t reach a goal, it’s so discouraging you’ll believe it was your fault and all you need is more willpower.
Small changes encourage and build confidence. The devil wants to destroy your temple of the Holy Spirit but God wants you to be a Healthy Warrior!
Stay strong, become successful.
“Watch and pray that you may not enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.” (Matthew 26:41)
Do you feel you are worth the arduous struggle to become healthier? How do you psych yourself up to desire a healthier lifestyle? Or do you need to? Are you happy with yourself the way you are now? Are you strong? Content? Energetic? Great!
It’s okay to have a waistline that’s slightly larger if you:
You get the picture. True change always begins from the inside out. Women especially have a desire to please. So who are you pleasing, self or God? God wants us to live abundantly but He doesn’t want us to make food an idol either. (Exodus 20:3)
Some get healthy for the wrong reason: pride. “Oh look how great I am. I have a 22 inch waist, aren’t I a goddess?” If you felt you had to compete against a perfect human specimen and face comparison or embarrassment, why would you ever try???
Run your own race: (2 Timothy 4:7.) If someone strives to be the best they can be, God appreciates those intentions. Be happy how God created you, you don’t have to be thin! Few in this world look like Miss Universe. But be beautiful inside! A beauty who spews forth foul language isn’t beautiful in God’s eyes and that is what matters!
The question is, are you the best person you can be? Are you slacking off? Can you visualize yourself healthier? No human is perfect, only Jesus was and he’s experienced our weaknesses in his humanity. When Jesus was hungry and tempted by Satan, he resisted. How? By memorizing Scripture. Put on the entire armor of God. We must love Jesus more than food!
If my patients weren’t mentally ready for change, it wouldn’t happen. A health quest is tough enough without asking yourself if you really want to suffer through all the self-denial and discipline it demands. I’ve stated this illustration before: what one cherishes, one takes care of. You wouldn’t use your grandmother’s antique wedding dress to wipe bugs off windows, would you? No, you would place it in a protective box and cherish it. Isn’t your health more important than a thing? Cherish it!
I ask again: think you’re worth the struggle? Mentally ready? Then you’ve already declared that you’re worth the cost of the uphill battle, let nothing stop you; not sabotage, nor discouragement or temptations by Aunt Maude’s fudge cake. I promise you, once your body becomes healthy, you will walk by the donut aisle and head for the fruit in the supermarket. Your body will crave and cherish those beneficial nutrients rather than empty, sugary energy.
Becoming a New Creation inside and out is an exciting endeavor! It’s a fabulous feeling to conquer one’s demons and come out victorious. Remain in control and have a preplanned strategy when temptations strike:
Live vibrantly each day for you are special and worth the price Christ paid for you!
Wow, I can’t believe it’s September already. Where did the summer go?
What a difference a year makes. Last year this time we were placing our Arizona home on the market and praying for a quick sale during a time of year hardly anyone searches for a home in the Arizona desert! And yet when God calls, He places all things in motion and says, “I’ve got your back. No worries.”
Northeast Ohio has a fabulous summer fruit/vegetable season. Produce stands abound. Even I grew radishes, cucumbers and tomatoes this summer. Me!!! The one who killed cactus in Arizona. Yes, God is good.
Over the summer I hope you’ve enjoyed many diverse berries. They’re so therapeutic, try to freeze them while you can. They’ll retain their nutritional value during the long winter ahead.
As you know I stress the mantra, “Eat for nutrients!” When we only eat for a caloric formula or a specific combination of the three basic food groups (fats, proteins and carbs) we run the risk of imbalance. Eating for nutrients restores balance and is much easier to follow. Rely on your brain’s hypothalamus to advise you what to consume for health and vibrancy.
All berries are rich in antioxidants which protect us against aging. This is incentive enough to consume as many as possible, right? But it is the concealed physiological abilities God infused them with which is truly astounding.
“It is the glory of God to conceal things, but the glory of kings is to search things out.” (Proverbs 25:2)
Strawberries, blueberries, raspberries and cranberries assist with cognitive function. Berries were used in a study of Alzheimer’s patients. These berries reduced inflammation in the brain and thus increased blood flow. The synaptic neurons in the brain were activated and thereby could pass through the blood brain barrier. Berries restored some memory deficiencies.
If berries reduce inflammation, then it stands to reason that it will improve arthritic conditions as well. Of course chronic inflammation is also the culprit in other types of illnesses such as heart disease, stroke and cancers.
These small wonder foods balance the alkaline pH scale. When one has a more alkaline than acidic pH, it highly reduces the possibility of cancers.
All berries are high in fiber. Blackberries contain 7.6 and raspberries 8 grams per cup. Fiber removes toxins from the body which strengthens our resistance to colon and other cancers. Blackberries are also recommended to correct bowel problems such as diarrhea.
Are you diabetic but crave something sweet? Studies on blackberries, raspberries and blueberries have discovered a noticeable decrease in blood sugar. One reason is because the abundant fiber and specific nutrients they contain slows the release of insulin.
Blueberries are especially amazing! Blueberries contain a chemical called myrtillin which regulates blood sugar. Their deep blue color is derived from a compound called anthocyanin. God has infused them with this chemical to protect it from environmental factors such as heat, cold, wind, drought and the sun’s ultraviolet rays. Protect yourself from the harmful sun’s rays by consuming a bowel of blueberries.
Berries lower blood pressure and reduce stroke risk.
And of course weight control! Since berries are only around 80 calories per cup, it’s a guilt-free food . . . albeit slathered in decadent dark chocolate is tempting, (fine in moderation) try to control yourself. Don’t make any food an idol before God.
And what’s the best fruit? The fruit of your spirit of course!
“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,” (Galatians 5:22)
