Those Wild & Crazy Diet Plans – Where do I Begin?!

thMSN3T0ZASo many diets . . .  so little time. Honestly there’s an incredible amount of wacky diets available. Where to begin?!

Let’s start with the Fruit Diet.  Do you realize if you only consume fruit (which is water-based, fiber packed and seems tempting) you’ll be missing out on over 50 essential nutrients your body needs? Balance is the key and this is definitely not balanced. You’ll never be able to stay on this plan because the body will become physiologically frustrated. The only good “diet plan” is the one you’ll stay on for life. (Diabetics should never attempt this diet.)

Here’s the main physiological reason why we can’t remain on any crazy plan:

The hypothalamus, an almond sized master gland in your brain is responsible for certain metabolic functions. It acts like a mechanic, checking on all the working parts of your car’s fuel system, so to speak. It might check your fluid levels and note, “Okay, you’ve got enough potassium but whoops, you’re a quart low on magnesium. You need more of that!”

The hypothalamus will begin nagging the body to consume more magnesium from an outside source. Well broccoli has magnesium, but so does chocolate. Which one do you think you’re going to give in to? Veggies . . . or chocolate? Of course the chocolate! Eventually, after you break and give in to temptation, you’ll probably believe you’re a failure which is what Satan wants you to think. Remember God created us as an intricate machine for a reason and all our parts work together for good. He made you and He doesn’t make junk!

How about those extreme Detox Diets which are meant to flush out toxic waste from our system? In one sense yes, we are to keep our body detoxified to allow our liver and kidneys to function properly. Our bodies should remain as close to the alkaline pH scale of  a 7.3 ratio as possible. But if one doesn’t know what he’s doing, he could offset his electrolyte system and death will follow . . . now THAT’s a way to lose weight permanently. By consuming fibrous whole grains, fruits, nuts, vegetables, herbs, seeds and water, you’ll naturally keep your body at a wholesome pH level. Consume meat as a side dish and add Essential Fatty Oils such as olive and canola oil sparingly.

There are no Secret Miracle Supplements. Some are downright dangerous, causing heart arrhythmia and muscle weakness. Our God is a God of order and balance. All body parts must function properly and there is no special food that cures weight gain. Slow down, use smaller plates, drink water and exercise instead. Boring but reliable.

The Fast Food Diet:  Each of us has a unique body chemistry, so there are exceptions to this rule, but basically, if one eats sugary, fattening junk food every day, we become lethargic, grumpy, even “spacy.” Nutrients give us energy and keeps our brains focused; there are very few nutrients in processed fast food and French fries.

The Cookie DietSeriously?  This ranks right up there with the Hot Dog Diet! Is this how God wants us to eat forever??? We are not cows or sheep which can eat one type of food every day, anyway. When I hear someone claim, “Man, I could eat this every night!” I think, no, not really. Listen to your hypothalamus. We need different nutrients to remain healthy.

Your body will do everything in its power to protect you. If you’ve heard of children who survive after drowning in a pool for 20 minutes or a 110 pound wife who lifts a Volkswagen off her husband, then you know how amazing our bodies are. So would you think Starvation Diets could work? All that happens is that your metabolism slows down believing you are ill. When you go back to eating normally again, it will hold on to every calorie for dear life, “protecting” you.

I’ve only briefly touched on a few crazy plans. Please don’t be swayed by diet gurus professing false physiological truths and waste your money. Research and use your God-given common sense.

    • Yes, isn’t it amazing what some will fall for? It truly is wishful thinking! Now remember, the Mediterranean diet isn’t a formula as much as a lifestyle choice. You choose to eat colorful, nutritious foods like veggies, fruits, nuts, seeds – all chocked full of healthy nutrients. If you eat too much of anything however, a person won’t lose weight.   1. The cookie diet really struck me…Sure I know it’s ridiculous but one of the 500 calorie foods I’ve cut down on is cookies. I must be related to the cookie monster! I like your Matthew quote. I’m also happy that you’re posting on this subject. I find it motivating for my own small diet I’m following.

    • Hi Carol, you are not alone, Craving cookies is not unusual. Physiologically, It could be the sugar rush your body craves or if brain needs energy because the brain feeds primarily on glucose. Psychologically, craving chewy cookies represent comfort and crunchy cookies mean repressed anger supposedly. So perhaps you are writing about meaningful memories – you know remembering your childhood and all that, but who knows – I just love cookies! 🙂 Appreciate your comment and I’m confident you’ll lose those eight pounds quickly 🙂 Blessings,.

  2. Great advice Ellie, Balance , Balance , Balance and commonsense just as you shared…. The only good “diet plan” is the one you’ll stay on for life, can’t get better than that!

    But Ellie I do have to fill you in about Chocolate, I will leave a link to save detail here, I hope it will be helpful although it may come as a bit of a surprise to you.

    • Thank you Anne for your caring comment. But Anne, I have to smile at your chocolate comment. You’ve followed my blog long enough to know that not only do I highly recommend anything in moderation, but highly endorse dark chocolate for its antioxidant properties and brain chemical phenylethylamine which releases reduces stress, improves mood and provides us with the same chemical feelings as being in love. My point is that most who crave chocolate can’t stop at one piece and then when they consume it, feel like a failure. If they consume a balanced diet beforehand instead of a fad one, they won’t feel like a failure which is exactly what Satan wants.

      • Did you read my Post Ellie that I gave you the link for, by your response it seems you didn’t or if you did you took it seriously instead of it being humor, except about the benefits of dark Chocolate, that was confirmed by my Doctor but yes Balance in all things.
