It’s about the time of year when I have gathered all these bits and pieces of information that really don’t fit into a long blog. So I just kind of place them into a “this & that” category and send them out all at once. I hope there is something here you hadn’t known which will help you:
Food Preparation:
Are you one of those who tastes the entire meal while cooking? That simple process can add an extra 100 calories to your day! So what to do? Place a piece of peppermint, hard candy or a piece of gum in your mouth to prevent unconscious tasting. Or, have someone else taste-test the ingredients. If they like it, you will too.
Snack Attacks:
Trying your hardest not to snack? Go brush your teeth, especially with a minty fresh flavor toothpaste. It helps and even if it doesn’t you have healthier gums!
Take a bubble bath with a soothing lavender or lemon balm fragrance with soft music playing in the background to keep your mind off food and away from the kitchen.
Want to stay out of that potato chip or M& M’s bag? Paint your nails or place or place Vaseline on the tops of them.
Getting a chocolate craving? Place 15 dark semi-sweet chocolate chips in a small bowl. Take only one at a time and slowly swirl it inside your mouth to get the savoring mouth feel without all the calories a fattening chocolate bar would contain. Eat slowly because when you are done, that’s all you get!
Staying Hydrated:
We all need proper hydration for great health. How do you know if you are getting enough water? Here’s a simple test to discover if you are: Pinch the soft skin between your right thumb and pointing finger. Hold for five seconds then release and count once more. If your skin bounces back within five seconds you are ingesting enough water.
Have frequent headaches? Drink water first. Perhaps your veins are restricted and the headache is a result of dehydration. Try consuming fruits like bananas and vegetables like spinach or alfalfa which contain magnesium. These strengthen and relax blood vessels.
Brain Tips:
If you are feeling slightly sluggish, kind of spacey and “out of it”, drink coconut water which revitalizes the brain! It also regulates body fluids with electrolytes such as magnesium, calcium and potassium.
Want to feel more alert for a test? It’s ironic that the herb “Sage” contains compounds that assist in memory and attentiveness. Make a sage tea and build brain cells in the process. The herb, rosemary, has also been shown to retain brain cells.
Why do dieters always seem to believe beef is off-limits? Consuming low-fat beef cuts such as sirloin, tenderloin, or ground round have less calories than dark meat chicken! Beef contains iron which increases blood flow as well as improves one’s brain.
And don’t avoid eggs either! Eggs yolks are the great source of choline which is a precursor for acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter involved in helping your memory.
Can’t Sleep?
Consume cherries, one of the best foods for creating melatonin, one of the factors necessary for good sleep. Also cherry juice is great for aching muscles due to its anti-inflammatory properties.
Well I hope these tips help. Got another quick question, please ask me!
These are great tips, Ellie. I love chips and when I have a craving (which happens too often :)) I give myself an overflowing portion in a small ramekin bowl… I loved your chocolate tip, especially about eating it slowly to savor it. I guess it goes for all food. Conscious eating. Although I don’t always do this, a good trick is to calculate what I’ve eaten during the day. Not in terms of calories but more in terms of protein, vegetables, fruits etc. So, when I feel hungry I think of what food source I haven’t eaten that day. Like I said, I don’t always do this. 🙂
As for cherries…this is great news because I’ve been having problems sleeping these days (heat wave!) and happen to have bought a bag of cherries. Your posts are so informative. I really appreciate reading them. 🙂

I’ve often told people to think in terms of nutrients, not fat grams or calories, etc. Since that’s what you do, it must be why you are so balanced and ‘smiley’ all the time. (You’re healthy and have a more alkaline pH.)
I’m so glad the chocolate tip helped. People believe chocolate is fattening but it’s the butterfat that is. One way why dark chocolate is healthier than milk chocolate. (I can eat bitter baking chocolate and be happy!) and I also suffer from insomnia a bit so cherries actually helped me too. I live to please you . . . 🙂 Blessings my friend,

Well I thought I wrote an entire blog about it but I sure couldn’t find it anywhere, so I guess I made my first mistake in twenty years, 🙂 ! Sorry. I found several blogs where I did write about regarding “an ageless vibrancy” and “sleep” though. I’ m sure you can find it faster under the search engine “cherries.”

So glad you mentioned the beef issue. I’ve known too many people who cut beef out of their diet and only seem to eat Chicken as a replacement.
I eat lean red meat mixed with vegetables, hard time convincing people it’s healthy 😦

So happy you mentioned that because eating any meat labeled “loin” or “round” is very low fat. (This includes pork which is rich in thiamine) I certainly wouldn’t eat beef every day but I wouldn’t eat any single meat every day. The body needs variety because all nutrients must work together. Thank you for your comment. (I enjoyed your posts too by the way) Blessings,

Thank you for your sweet comment, I appreciate it. In New Creations Ministries I cover our mental, physical and spiritual connection to food using Biblical applications. God expects us to keep our bodies holy but sadly we tend to place food on an idol alter. Why is that? I try to present answers and encourage ourselves to honor Him. I hope you will return because you have a great blog yourself! Blessings,
(A lot of people have picked up on that particular point.)

Sometimes I reach for treats and eat without paying attention; almost mindlessly while I’m standing in the kitchen doing something else at the same time. I need to be more intentional about what I’m putting into my body. I will continue to read your blog :).

Thanks, I needed this. Oh and I don’t eat beef cause it’s yucky! Lol.
I had a question…is it true bananas are fattening? I have a friend who says I should stay away from them because they have a lot of carbs, but I love bananas and I don’t want to give them up, haha 🙂

Didn’t we hear the same about eggs, potatoes, avocados, bread? Sigh. No bananas are not fattening. (I grew up eating bananas every day and currently weigh 112 pounds.) Rather they are filled with nutrients needed to sustain life functions, including a healthy heart!
If someone tells you something that foolish say that whatever God made and was found in the Garden of Eden is good. To say it isn’t, means that God created something bad and He lies. God cannot lie. ( I’d bet if He created poisons, He instructed Adam on how to use them for good)
Thanks for bringing this up because it has always bugged me whenever I hear others urge to restrict certain foods. We should eat for nutrients. Thanks Deborah, blessings and good health to you – go eat that banana and if you get grief, have her write me! 🙂

Haha, thanks! I will go buy a banana right now! 😀
I was told so many “tips” by people, it can get confusing at times. I have been losing weight and I’m doing it in a healthy manner. I don’t want to restrict myself so much that I can’t even enjoy a nice meal. So many rules, makes me crazy! Lol.
Thank you for the advice and taking time out to answer questions 🙂

Now you know what I have to go through as a nutritionist. 🙂 Everyone thinks they are an “expert” because they “saw it in a magazine once” 🙂 You get the idea.
God is the plum-line on which we judge all knowledge. Of course He’s perfect, I am not. Luv ya gal, keep up the great work. If you ever want me to write about something, just ask.
