Is This Actually A Diet?

I want to dedicate this particular post to my blogging friend,  http://theeditorsjournal.wordpress.com  for her insightful point regarding my chocolate pill post recently: people will fall for anything!

Does anyone remember when Oprah Winfrey, to prove a point for her popular television show in the 1990s, set up a totally fictitious diet center in a local shopping mall?  That ‘diet’ consisted of th[7]eating only hot dogs and ice cream.  How silly . . .  who’d fall for that?

Well . . .  actually . . . over 40 people signed up in three days! It certainly proved her point that people will desperately believe anything and we must be wary of diet scams.

The question one has to ask is, why???  Surely they couldn’t believe that consuming sodium-filled, chemically-laden, saturated-fat, processed meat and dairy  (5-22 grams  of saturated fat per 1/2 cup in ice cream – and who only eats a 1/2 cup?) would produce the fit body of a healthy person? Isn’t health more important than weight loss?

Unfortunately not to some. Research states that the diet industry is a $50-70 billion dollar (who can keep up, it keeps rising) industry. Many are looking for a quick fix, even at the expense of their health. They are literally dying to be thin! Nutritional education, physiology, overcoming challenges, establishing lifelong strategies are certainly more conducive to health than a quick fix.

Hebrews 13:9 “Do not be led away by diverse and strange teachings, for it is good for the heart to be strengthened by grace, not by foods, which have not benefited those devoted to them.”

People are desperate and will waste their time and money on any chance that it might work for a short time. No fad diet is lasting and some can actually harm the bio-rhythms of the heart and metabolism.

Do you believe this is how God meant for us to eat?  I sincerely doubt it!  The Israelite’s followed God’s strict dietary laws in Leviticus, primarily for the safety of its people. There were no refrigerators, ice, running water, instant hand sanitizers or other sanity measures in place in this age. With all of our self-professed superior knowledge we fail to eat better today than in biblical times.

If some would believe anything, even be swayed to follow a ridiculous dietary plan, don’t you wonder how many would fall for another false prophet when he arrives? This is another reason to keep your family’s faith grounded in the Word of God. Remain strong!

1 John 4:1,  “Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to determine if they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world.”

  1. It is amazing what people will fall for. Like anything worthwhile, weight loss is hard. It takes time and discipline. My wife and I have been there. I will admit that the magic pill is appealing. Nice tie in to the Gospel… Thanks

    • Thanks Mark, yes, some people are so desperate to lose weight and it is so sad. Health is more important than being thin! (Did you ever read my post on the fallacies of magic pills?) It is hard to lose the pounds but I have enjoyed the self-discipline I received in maintaining it. I really appreciate your taking the time to comment on my blog. Blessings,

  2. Ooooogh! Nice correlation right there! If people are so easily swayed by something like the hot dog diet how easily they can be swayed with the choices of who they follow. I never saw that Oprah episode but I am not surprised at the result. Folks are so suggestible and gullible and without them / us enormous corporations would be brought to their knees!
And along with quick fixes that will kill you before making you slim, how about taking up smoking because it keeps you slim or taking speed or any other drug to stay slim?
    Humans are a strange breed!
I like my post! If I’m terribly good can I have another soon!!? 🙂

    • So happy my post made an impression. 🙂 Yes, I live to please you . . . so let me think . . . 🙂

I agree about those dangerous practices to lose weight. I once was employed at a Christian Drug Rehabilitation Organization and sadly some of those who entered addicted, began when they heard meth, as well as speed, would help them lose weight. They were almost “drop dead gorgeous” if you know what I mean. It’s a serious problem when people are reluctant to make peace with the way God made them. Blessings,

      • Yup. In my mind as a baby you are an open book. THAT is when a parent has to step in and be the one who paints the world for the child, giving them the proper grounding and information.
SOMEONE is going to educate that child and if the parent doesn’t, then their misled friends or television or magazines or the internet will. The parent is the first one who has a shot at ‘brainwashing’ the child in the right way. Many don’t take up the significant challenge.
