Avoid Becoming a Health Chameleon

We’ve all seen them.   hypocricy

I’m speaking of those who attend church looking properly pious during each service. However, as soon as church is over, they blend into a worldly crowd: they laugh at a co-worker’s dirty joke, fudge a report or degrade another employee.  The homefront’s a battlefield but on Friday night they’re the ‘life of the party’. Back on Sunday morning though, they reverently sing hymns and pray righteously for all the world to hear. They blend in with the crowd wherever they go, the church or the world.

I call them, “Spiritual Chameleons”. Sadly, it’s one of the reasons people avoid church. They’ve done more to turn others away from God’s Word than any other obstacle!

I asked a friend once why she didn’t attend church. “The church doesn’t work for me!” she replied. “Too many hypocrites!”

How sad. She failed to comprehend that we shouldn’t attend church to be seen, but to discover and worship Christ!

Begin by judging yourself against God’s standards, not against others.  It’s like a Spiritual Westminster Dog Show! Please don’t compare yourself with any other Christian for we are all accountable for our own actions. Compare yourself only to the standard Christ set down for us. What does God ask of our attitude?

“for it is written: “Be holy, because I am holy.” 1 Peter 1:16

Similarly, if you desire health, look to Absolute Truth in physiology.  Don’t become a “weight loss chameleon”.  It won’t work, no matter how hard you try!

Unfortunately I see health chameleons all around too. Several famous talk show hosts flit from one diet plan to another, drawing others into their dangerous web. If they truly knew physiological absolutes, they wouldn’t.

Does anyone remember in the 1990s, when Oprah, to prove a point, set up a totally fictitious  diet center in a mall?  That ‘diet’ consisted of eating only hot dogs and ice cream.  How silly, who’d sign up for that? Well . . .  41 people in three days.

Suppose someone says, “Hey I’m on the Atkins diet. You should try it. I lost 126 lbs in one month!!!” So you try it and all you’ll get is a sluggish feeling and higher cholesterol. Didn’t work for you, although it worked for her.

Next you’ll see a celebrity on television stating they lost 35 lbs on this boxed food program.  So you’ll try that.  You might lose 2 lbs a week and spend a bunch of money on packaged food that doesn’t hold your interest after it’s consumed twelve times. Your wallet’s lighter though.

Okay, so now you’re getting desperate and searching for quicker results.  That new popular pill that health clinic is advertising seems like the perfect solution!  After two months of heart-racing nervous reactions, a cranky attitude and a husband who doesn’t enjoy coming home to a nasty, unkind, hungry wife, it’s too high price to pay for thinness. (Notice I didn’t say health)

After trying so hard to become thinner by attempting everything the world has, you might throw up your hands: “See, weight loss doesn’t work for me! They’re all shams! ” Becoming a weight loss chameleon never works! Embrace your uniqueness! You aren’t meant to blend in with everyone else!

Happily. God established a true diet plan for our physical health in the Garden: fruits, vegetables, seeds, whole grains and after the flood, lean meat. Try Truth . . . it works.

Job 31:5,6:  “If I have walked with falsehood and my foot has hastened to deceit;  Let me be weighed in a just balance, and let God know my integrity!”

  1. Good analogies. I enjoy your blog very much and is a good reminder to stay on the path though we are tempted to take shortcuts with all the touting of new diet solutions and pills to be thin. Yesterday I actually craved a peach over a chocolate candy bar for a snack and it was wonderful! That small delicious peach had only 45-50 calories and it was way more satisfying than the 220 calorie candy loaded with fat and all that guilt. It’s taken over a year to get off the sugar high junk food wagon and it sure wasn’t easy because of being sugar junky monkey – LOL!! Keep up the Good Work of Encouragement!

  2. Love this post! I have just recently begun eating only non-processed foods. Psalm 34:8- Taste and see that the Lord is good! I have been eating “paleo” foods and have thoroughly enjoyed eating this way. I have struggled with food my whole life, but by God’s grace, He is helping me to make better choices daily. I tell my girls all the time that the Lord makes each of us unique and He didn’t make us all the same size 🙂 Blessings to you!

    • That’s great Julie, way to go! There’s nothing the devil would enjoy more than destroying our strong Christian temple and you remembered that “Greater is He that is in you than he that is in the world!” 1 John 4:4. And it’s so great that your children are learning such important principles too! Thanks for your comment and blessings to you,

  3. Great post, very enlightening ideas. It is true we hear weight loss strategies all over the media and somehow nothing seems to work for us if we try any of them. I agree with you we must eat healthy and embrace our uniqueness and enjoy good health, physical and spiritual. Thanks for sharing a lovely post with us Ellie. Take care.
