Caution! The Silly Season for Weight Loss is About to Begin

Starting January 1,  75 % of the human race will be creating New Year Resolutions.  Of those, 80% will begin a “diet” trying to lose the crazy pounds they put on during the holidays. By the third week, only about 10% will still be on it.  Why do they quit?  Because they never got to the root of WHY they eat in the first place! A “quick fix” only masks the core problem.

Many years ago, as I was explaining those basic necessities for losing weight to a new patient:  consume smaller portions, slow down, exercise and drink water, she sat back in her chair, looked at me and stated discouragingly, “Oh Ellie, I know all that already.”

Well, I didn’t doubt it.  The average patient who came to see me had attempted at least six weight loss plans before coming into my office. With so much media coverage today from morning news shows, talk and cable health programs, magazines and infomercials, everyone seems to be an ‘expert’ in the field. Most people know what is required to lose weight but they fail to reach success.

When my new patient mentioned that statement above, something clicked inside my brain. If patients know ‘all that’ already, then why aren’t they following it? Immediately a Bible verse popped into my head:

James 2:19: “You believe in God? Good!  Even the demons believe that – and shudder.”

The demons also had all this “head” knowledge and no “heart” knowledge, so it failed to change their actions as well. As I meditated on that verse, I thought how very much like those who say they ‘know’ Christ but do nothing with it. Knowing and doing are two different things! It is a matter of accepting Christ’s gift of salvation personally and doing something about it that evokes a changed behavior. For many know, but do nothing to practice their faith, anymore than they have  all this health knowledge and do anything to become healthy. Actions glorify the Lord, so like salvation, change must come from within! And that’s how New Creations Ministries began.

Discovering why people act as they do and producing a lifestyle change is what I enjoy most about being a nutritional counselor! Practical education, understanding why actions occur and motivating others to present their bodies as a living sacrifice before the Lord produces individual change.

Romans 12:1,2 1 “Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God—this is your spirituala act of worship. Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.

Creating a habit usually takes at least three weeks. I’ll be posting more often in hope of encouraging you in your goal so please stay with me.  I’ll discuss such subjects as:

  • The best commercial diet programs available, (as well as false diet plans you should stay away from!)
  • Why Dieting is like the Westminster Dog Show
  • Why Craving Chocolate Isn’t a Personality Disorder
  • Creating Solomon Smarts for High Risk Situations
  • Conquering Nutritional Fads and Myths
  • How to Stay Motivated When No One Compliments Anymore
  • Accepting Oneself, Faults & All . . . and many more.

However, I want to address what challenges you. PLEASE let me know what restricts you (or a “friend”) from reaching health goals. I assure you, you are not alone.  And if I don’t know the answer immediately, I’ll research until I do.  We’re in this together; God, you and me. What a Support Group we are – with a team like ours we’re bound to be successful!!! Let’s get started . . .

Unlike other awards which you can only add to your blog once – this award is different!

The first one you’ll receive is the ‘1 star’ award – and every time you are given the award by another blog – you can add another star! (I’m not exactly sure how to add another star but you can check out the above website link and if I get another I’ll simply copy the ones on her website, thank you.  (Well what can you expect from someone who is computer challenged???)

There are a total of 6 stars to collect.

God Alone Heals Hurting Hearts

The hearts of all were saddened last Friday when the unfathomable crime happened at Sandy Hook Elementary School. To attempt to write about weight loss when our hearts are breaking for the families of those touched by the tragedy, seemed insensitive.

It is my unshakeable belief that we have a Sovereign God who knows all that is going to happen to us, as spoken of in Psalm 139.  He remains a loving God who desires only good in our lives. My faith remains unshaken. But as His creation, He instilled in people a free will to choose either good or evil, so we must remain diligent and strong in our faith, because temptations and evil surround us daily.

God created Adam perfectly but Adam chose his own way. Still God loved him.  God rescued his Chosen People from slavery, they chose to do evil. Still God loved them.  God loved us so much He offered his only Son as a sacrifice for this sinful world.  Yet many still choose evil.  When tragedy strikes, they shake their fist at God and demand, “How could YOU allow this to happen?”

My friends, WE allowed this to happen by our silence. Just like the frog in the frying pan who simmers, oblivious to his surroundings until he’s  destroyed, we stood by and watched as the world changed.

When I attended grade school, religious education was taught each Tuesday afternoon. Well, religious studies were soon taken out of school. Then the Bible was banned and the Ten Commandments weren’t allowed to be displayed. Finally God Himself, was thrown out of our schools.  A large void remained.

Children searched for new role models. Who did they think would come knocking on the door to fill the gap??? Of course . . .  Satan did!

What good can possibly come from this? If nothing else, I hope parents realize that today is the day of salvation.  It’s never too early to speak to your children about Christ’s eternal gift this holiday season, for it’s indeed a gift for our days aren’t guaranteed.

2 Peter 3:9 “The Lord isn’t really being slow about his promise, as some people think. No, he is being patient for your sake. He does not want anyone to be destroyed, but wants everyone to repent.”

Acceptance of salvation is the only thing that matters in our life span.  How many times have you heard of parents waiting, believing that the child can make up his own mind in the far-off future, because “I certainly don’t want to force my values on my children. They can choose for themselves after they’ve seen all the possibilities.”  May I ask, “If not you, who will?”  Do you want Madonna’s or Lindsay Lohan’s values instilled in your child’s mind???  Their value system is, “. . . and everyone did what was right in their own eyes!”

Turn on the television and you’ll see countless graphic, violent crime shows, raunchy sit-coms and celebrity reality shows. Then throw in today’s bloodthirsty movies and video games and it’s a petri dish of deteriorating, insensitive values.

Jeremiah 17:9 “The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately sick; who can understand it?”

God understands it! But we’ve pushed Him out of our schools in the name of “political correctness.” This tragedy should be a wake-up call for our country to desire change at the root of our problem, not just placing a band-aid over it.

As former Governor Huckabee commented this morning, “We can’t expect to operate a civil society in a moral vacuum.”  Amen, will you join us?

Romans 1:16, “I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God for the salvation of everyone who believes: first for the Jew, then for the Gentile.”
